The social environment that the child was destined to grow up in did not believe that women were capable of any intelligence and the women grew up believing it. I found it quite sad that Daisy made such a comment. Mostly because it solidified the sadness and boredom she felt in her life. Even sadder was that she never tried to challenge the norm of the time even though she had the potential to. It pained me to read how she had to convince herself that she should be happy with the way her life was going and that she was pretending to be what she was not in order to fit in with the societal norm of the time. â€Å"That’s my Middle West . . . the street lamps and sleigh bells in the frosty dark. . . . I see now that this has been a story of the West, after all- Tom and Gatsby, Daisy and Jordan and I, were all Westerners, and perhaps we possessed some deficiency in common which made us subtly unadaptable to Eastern life. â€Å" The use of places to embody themes, characters, and values in The Great Gatsby is a constant method the author used to depict the lifestyle of the characters. While the east is known for the high social life, the midwest, was known for more traditional moral values. This was the moment in the story when Nick realized that he would never fit in where he was because of the differences in values. A realizatin that eventually sent him back to the midwest. â€Å"Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter- tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther. . . . And then one fine morning- So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the pa st. â€Å" As the final words spoken in the novel, this paragraph brough the novel full circle to the theme of significance of the past to dreams of the future. The green light represents the future and the struggle of people to achieve their goals by changing who they are. The problem, is that the past and present tend to draw them back into their past lives. Which the characters in the story then use to try and help them create a better future for themselves. The green light is their desire to continue to keep their optism and the hope that they will never lose it when looking to their future, even if it becomes harder and harder to achieve their personal goals that would fulfill their great American dream.
